Playing Carnevale

29 January 2025|Carnevale

Getting started with Carnevale is extremely easy. The game is designed to be as simple as possible for new players, but unique factions, synergies and dozens of scenarios mean that it’s hard to master.

As a small scale skirmish miniatures game, you’ll need around 10 models for a full gang, although there are many more to choose from! Each character brings something different to your gang, from the pummelling power of a Raadru to the nimble Pilferer, each character has a role to play. It’s easy to make a gang, but with such varied roles, you’ll quickly find having a few more characters handy is ideal for tackling all situations!

All miniatures are supplied unassembled and unpainted, but most are very easy to put together, and with a little experience you’ll have no trouble at all.

With a low model-count and seven different factions to choose from, each with their own evocative aesthetics and unique playstyle, it’s easy to get friends to join in! The core rules are designed for 2 or more players, with many scenarios written to include up to 4 players as standard. With an enthusiastic and quickly growing online community, you might even find other players already in your area.

Scenery plays an important role in Carnevale. Venice is an incredibly evocative setting, and the tabletop experience has been designed from the canal up to make the city as important as possible. Characters can climb buildings, assassinate enemies from above, sail down ziplines, even jump across rooftops. You can also row gondolas, swim in canals, and drown your enemies!

There are several options for scenery. The starter sets contain loads of cardboard buildings for an easy start to the game. There are card tiles or neoprene mats with water and street designs to help you out since you’ll need canals in your game. Or you can jump head-first into the water and check out the full range of Streets of Venice MDF scenery. It’s easy to assemble, sturdy, and very affordable. We’re releasing new scenery all the time, with loads of modular buildings that can easily be clipped together to make winding streets with multiple levels

Rulebooks

First of all, you can click here to download the full core rules for free! This version of the rulebook is the most up-to-date version around, including any errata and FAQs as standard. The digital download contains an index and easy tappable links to help you navigate - this makes playing the game easy!

The Carnevale rulebook is a massive tome, full of everything you could possibly need to start off! With over 150 pages of background story written by Lewis Clarke and New York Times Bestselling author Gav Thorpe, it’ll keep you reading and re-reading for hours. The full core rules are in here, although as the oldest TTCombat publication of the game, there have been some tweaks and changes (all of which are in the digital book. This massive book also contains 35 unique scenarios, including campaigns for each of the six main gangs. This rulebook comes in the large Carnevale 2-Player Starter Box.

The small Carnevale rulebook is a fair bit easier to carry around! At 48 pages it contains the same core rules as the large rulebook, but is easier to take to games. It even comes in Spanish! This rulebook comes in the smaller Escape From San Canciano intro box.

Blood on the Water is our first campaign expansion for Carnevale! It moves the story on one year, introducing new character types, personalities, sub-factions, and plenty of twists and turns along the way! It also contains the full core rules in the most up-to-date format at time of printing. There are even advanced rules in there (which are clearly marked). Things like Reactions make combat more dynamic, while extra scenery rules add Boats to sail. There are even more gang building options for unique items and equipment.

Models

The Carnevale 2-Player Starter Box contains literally everything you could possibly need. The massive box has a big rulebook, loads of cardboard scenery and gaming tiles, dice, range rulers, counters, templates… oh and of course 15 beautiful resin miniatures! All of these miniatures are single-piece and are designed to make full (mostly) equal gangs of both the Guild and Rashaar. Containing a Leader each, as well as Heroes and Henchmen, you’ll have everything you need to play. There’s even a multi-part resin gondola! There’s a long intro campaign included, which introduces all the rules for the game step by step.

Escape From San Canciano is a 2-player intro box. For those that are just looking to get a feel for the game, this is for you. There are 8 miniatures included, 4 for both the Guild and Rashaar. All are single-piece - you just need to stick them to their bases and get going. This box has a 2 foot square fold out double-sided map and cardboard buildings, as well as dice and cardboard tokens. The small format rulebook is here to teach you the game, and a pair of scenarios will help you learn.

If you don’t fancy the Guild or Rashaar, there are 5 other factions to choose from. Every faction has a Starter Gang which contains a complete gang in a box, with models that are perfect for beginners or to help you see how the faction plays.

After that, you’ll probably want some more miniatures - they’re beautifully detailed after all! Each faction has loads of sets to help expand your gang. Whether you want to herd a bunch of beasts to battle with your Doctors, or take fully armoured Vatican knights into the canals (brave), there’s lots to choose from. Some of the boxes are even complete legal gangs in themselves - just look out for the complete gang symbol on the TTCombat store page.
