The people known as Gifted are not a single entity. Most have never even met each other, let alone work together. Each holds their own view of the world, and although sometimes their paths and goals cross, it's equally likely that members of this moniker will cross blades if they were to meet in the streets. The powers that the Gifted possess are linked to the Rent, gaining potency when it waxes, and trickling away to almost nothing when it fades from view. More and more are unveiling themselves as time goes on, and although there are rumours of Gifted all over the world, Venice holds the highest concentration.
Whether it's behind a mask or in a group like the Commedia dell’Arte members of the Gifted have often hidden in the crowd. Playing shows throughout Venice, the Commedia is a performing troupe made up entirely of Gifted. Lurking behind the vibrant costumes and masks are mad individuals who inflict horrendous deeds to satisfy their needs. Yet this collection of performers are not the only Gifted to hide behind a mask. The first known Gifted appeared a month after the Rent in the Sky opened. Soaring above the streets of Venice, White Dove dazzled crowds with her angelic appearance before setting ablaze a departing ship with her scintillating light. Years later her identity remains a secret.
While there are thousands of tales of phantoms spanning hundreds of years, one that has caught favour in Venice is that of Black Spectre. a bodiless apparition that is said to have once been a nobleman, he is now doomed to wander the land, bringing abject feat with him. Born Mario Petralone, he grew up wealthy and travelled the world until he was caught in Florence when the Rent first appeared. Under its light, Mario was burned alive but did not perish and now exists beyond his mortal frame. Struggling to return home he ultimately possessed his own son's body to once again gain a mortal form.
The Black Spectre isn't the only monster that lurks in Venice. Through Rent light magic and the Ospedales treatments, the Aberration was created. A hulking monster filled with rage from the other realm, it is a tentacled mass set free in Venice.
Whilst many Gifted seek to find protection in anonymity, it's not always possible to hide. A sad example of this is the tale of Zovena Vela. The daughter of a wealthy Spanish noble, Rosa de Borja y Velasco started to develop otherworldly powers shortly after she arrived in Venice. Under the ever-present gaze of the Rent in the Sky, her abilities manifested themselves as raging fires. Hunted by the Strigoi for the magic in her blood, Zovena has been unable to stay in a single place for very long. Not a vicious creature like Starspawn nor a charismatic figure like the Duke, this teenage girl is hated for merely existing.

The Rent in the Sky touched some more than others, giving them otherworldly powers, but cursing them to a life of madness. The Commedia dell’Arte are blessed with eldritch skills but cursed to slowly turn into the very characters they portray on stage.
The Ospedale San Servolo is a terrifying place for the residents of Venice. The idea of being sent there is akin to a death sentence. The Doctors help residents as best as possible, but anyone too far gone is relocated, and rarely seen again. For the safety of everyone, of course.
The Harbinger, the Herald, Prophet... lots of names for the same being. This strange figure appeared in places around the world simultaneously, but only in one was he murdered. The assassin's blade tore open the Harbinger's chest, a gouge that tore open the heavens and reality.
Mario Petralone was a Venetian-born Nobleman. That is until he was caught in Florence during the appearance of the Rent in the Sky. He did not perish in that moment, but existed in a space between realms. Driven by grief and rage Mario possessed his own son.
Known across the city as the Demolitionist, Boomer, Mistress Flame, or any number of other synonyms, this is no woman to mess with. Cursed with an unnaturally strong constitution by the Rent in the Sky, she barely feels pain, but is also stripped of many other senses.
The Duke is a man of opposites. His duality knows no bounds - offering service to those who need it one night, then turning on them for coin the next. Although obviously Gifted by the Rent, his powers are relative unknowns too - able to blend into his surroundings and disappear at will.
This resident of the Ospedale reacted to treatment in a way previously unseen by any of the Doctors. The patient mutated and erupted into a mass of tentacles, destroying the lab and slaughtering its captors, leaving none alive that would be able to repeat the procedure. The creature disappeared into the night, with no witnesses to speak of.
There are few tales as strange as that of Divuorafuoco and Burattino. So it goes that distraught after his family died in the calamity from the heavens, Divuorafuoco turned inwards to his craft. Left old and alone, he tried to recreate the happiness of a family, making a new son from the same tree as that which stood on his family burial ground.
A mysterious woman from far off lands, Fadhila keeps her private life exactly that. While she is the very life of parties (parties she's paid to attend), her history and true self are reserved for only her closest confidantes. Unlike her powers! Projecting protective bubbles she is able to shield those close to her from harm, and is always keen to show off her gifts.
It's not known who Fate nor Justice were before the Rent in the Sky opened. Whether they were simply people changed by the opening of that celestial rip, none will know.
Given their stoic and universal nature though, it's highly likely that these beings have existed for eons, and the magic of the Rent has simply given them corporeal form, or tied their essence to unlikely bystanders.
